According to traffic studies and analysis of the city’s statistical data on auto accidents, the frequency of hit-and-run collisions in Chicago has increased in the last year. In fact, officials recorded the largest number of accidents, fatalities, and incapacitating injuries in 2021 when compared to the previous four years.

Moreover, per additional facts and figures from Chicagoland authorities, 36,305 hit-and-run collisions happened in 2021 alone, an average of roughly 100 per day and an 18% increase over the 30,695 that occurred the previous year. More than 32,130 hit-and-run accidents happened in the preceding 12 months, and 31,401 were documented the year prior.

And in June 2021, authorities recorded the largest number of hit-and-run collisions of any month in the previous four years: 3,565.
