Des Plaines, IL - Colette Smith Killed in Pedestrian Crash on I-294 at Central Rd

Des Plaines, IL (February 25, 2023) – A woman who was killed in a hit-and-run accident early on Saturday morning, February 25, on the Tri-State Tollway has been identified.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reports that Colette Smith, 31, of Des Plaines, was tragically hit just before 1:00 a.m. on Interstate 294, close to Central Road in north suburban Glenview.

Smith was discovered on the side of the road after being struck by a FedEx truck and a white passenger vehicle, according to the police.

The white passenger vehicle left the scene, but police eventually tracked it down and detained the driver.

State police are looking into the event; they did not immediately provide any other details about the collision.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family members of Colette Smith.

Pedestrian Accident Deaths in Chicago

In recent years, pedestrian fatalities in the United States have climbed by around 36%, despite a general decline in fatalities from other types of motor vehicle accidents. Illinois is home to many of the most populous and walkable cities in the United States, including Chicago and Springfield. While traversing the packed sidewalks and roadways, pedestrians in these places face a larger risk of death or severe injury than automobiles.

Sadly, Cook County has the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities among all Illinois counties. This year has already witnessed at least 120 pedestrian deaths in Cook County, the greatest number in at least five years.

Victims of a tragic catastrophe may feel powerless in the face of their persistent physical suffering, profound mental distress, and/or significant financial obligations. All too often, these individuals pass away, leaving behind bereaved family members and a pile of medical costs.

If a pedestrian accident results in injury or death, it may be possible to file a claim for damages. After consulting with a Chicago auto accident attorney, you may be entitled to reasonable financial compensation.

The Illinois Wrongful Death Act allows victims of traffic accidents caused by the negligence or recklessness of another motorist to file a claim. After a successful court case, the victim or their family members may get monetary compensation.

In the event that such a catastrophe occurs in Illinois, family members should consult a lawyer without delay. If you or a loved one has experienced a preventable injury or death, D&W Law Group will fight for your just recompense.

Our team believes that victims’ families should never have to shoulder the financial burden of a negligent driver’s careless actions on the road. Our legal team will assign you a single point of contact who will handle all parts of filing a claim for your accident.
