Chicago, IL – Five Children Hospitalized, Driver Arrested After Chain-Reaction Crash on S Halsted St
Chicago, IL (June 6, 2022) – On Sunday in the Chicago neighborhood of Back of the Yards, at least six people were wounded when a motorist disregarded a traffic signal and triggered a chain-reaction collision, according to police.
At around 6:50 p.m. in the 4300 block of South Halsted Street, a white SUV driven by a 29-year-old male traveling northbound and speeding ran a red light and collided with the driver’s side of a van, per statements released by the Chicago Police. Investigators added that the minivan came to rest after colliding with a nearby post.
The SUV then collided with a passenger vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light close by, causing that car’s driver to then collide with a marked Chicago police squad car.
One officer suffered an arm injury and was sent to a local hospital in stable condition. Five children in the minivan, three boys and two girls, were transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital for minor injuries.
The SUV’s driver was arrested, though details about their charges were not made public. The collision is still being reviewed by investigators from Area One.
Our hope is that the injured individuals will make a full recovery.
Major Vehicle Crash Injuries in Chicago
The majority of intersection events reported yearly by the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) involve left turns and inattentive driving. Approximately 44 percent of all automobile accidents occur at intersections, according to government statistics. This is the second most frequent kind of automobile accident, behind rear-end collisions.
Sadly, Cook County has a high prevalence of traffic accidents, particularly at busy intersections. More than a quarter of all traffic incidents in Illinois occur in and around the Chicago metropolitan region, according to state data.
Regardless of the cause of an accident, victims and their families pay the price for harm caused by others’ irresponsibility. Those affected by these unfortunate incidents may feel helpless when faced with severe psychological stress and expensive medical expenses.
If you have been wounded or lost a loved one due to one of these occurrences, you may have access to a number of legal remedies. When you have been involved in an accident that was not your fault, you should immediately call a Chicago car accident attorney.
Under Illinois law, car accident victims who sustain injuries as a result of another driver’s negligence or inattention are eligible for compensation. However, because obtaining a comprehensive and acceptable monetary settlement from drivers or their insurance companies may be difficult, it is essential for accident victims to retain the services of an attorney.
