Chicago, IL - Tanner Kapan Killed in Motorcycle Crash on W Irving Park Rd

Chicago, IL (April 25, 2022) – A man was killed in a hit-and-run accident that occurred Sunday evening, April 24, in the Portage Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

Officers with the Chicago Police Department say that 25-year-old Tanner Kapan was riding a motorcycle eastbound along the 5200 block of West Irving Park Road when he was hit by the driver of a 2003 BMW sedan.

Kapan was rushed by EMTs to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the BMW fled the scene, according to witnesses at the scene and CPD officers.

No one is in custody as of Monday afternoon, though CPD’s Major Accidents Unit is continuing to investigate at this time. CPD officers asked that anyone with additional information contact them directly.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Tanner Kapan.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Illinois

Across the state of Illinois, particularly in busy metro regions like Chicago, serious injuries or fatalities from motorcycle accidents are all too common.

In fact, per recent data released by officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation, almost 80% of motorcycle wrecks result in injury. And of riders who suffer injuries, more than 30% suffer critical, incapacitating injuries that take months or even years to resolve.

Sadly, motorcyclists often die from the injuries they sustain in these crashes. And when these victims are killed in an accident that’s occurred through no fault of their own, their mourning family members are left to cope with devastating emotional trauma and severe financial consequences.

But if you’ve sustained injuries or lost a loved one in a motorcycle accident caused by another person’s negligence, you may have legal options moving forward. When your loved one has died in a preventable accident, contact an injury accident attorney in Chicago as soon as possible.
