Chicago, IL – Two Dead, 16 Hurt in Wrong-Way Wreck at 87th St & Cottage Grove Ave
Chicago, IL (November 23, 2022) – According to authorities, a motorist in a stolen automobile traveling the wrong way caused a multi-vehicle crash on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday evening, claiming two lives and wounding sixteen other victims.
The incident was reported at around 5:00 p.m. in close proximity to the intersection of East 87th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue.
The Chicago Fire Department said in a tweet that at least ten persons were brought to nearby hospitals and several are still being assessed.
A 53-year-old woman and the driver of a silver car were sent to Christ Hospital with unknown injuries, according to police reports. A 54-year-old man standing on the sidewalk sustained a dislocated kneecap and was transferred to Trinity Hospital in fair condition.
Meanwhile, a 56-year-old Volkswagen driver was brought to Saint Bernard Hospital with a back injury. Three children in another car were sent to Comer’s Children Hospital.
Police added that a 37-year-old woman, the driver of a Lexus, had undisclosed injuries but is in fair condition at the hospital, and a 10-year-old child, a passenger in the Lexus, broke his wrist. In addition, another passenger in the Lexus, an 18-year-old male passenger, sustained unknown injuries. They were all sent to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Firefighters say that, in total, four individuals have life-threatening injuries, one person is in severe but stable condition, and five people have non-life-threatening injuries. Two others were declared deceased at the scene.
The suspect vehicle was reported stolen from Markham early Wednesday morning, but more information has not yet been available. An active investigation continues in the meantime.
