Chicago, IL – Two Drivers, Ten Students Hospitalized After Bus Crash on Kedzie Ave at 31st St

Chicago, IL - Two Drivers, Ten Students Hospitalized After Bus Crash on Kedzie Ave at 31st St

Chicago, IL (May 3, 2023) – On Tuesday, a bus transporting children with special needs crashed head-on with an SUV in Little Village, sending 17 victims to the hospital.

Officers with the Chicago Police Department say that the bus was traveling north on Kedzie Avenue at 31st Street at 10:15 a.m. when it collided with a southbound Subaru Outback.

A representative from Sunrise, the bus company employed by Chicago Public Schools, said that the kids were leaving the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences on the city’s Far Southwest Side for a field trip.

Both the bus and passenger vehicle drivers were transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital with severe to critical injuries.

Ten pupils, aged 16 to 18, were also taken to the hospital and were claimed to be in stable condition. Both St. Anthony and Stroger Hospitals received the victims.

The police further stated that the vehicle was seen by witnesses crossing the median line to the left. Chicago police said the motorist was cited for driving without insurance and with a suspended license.

In the meantime, an investigation remains active, and no additional details were made public.

Our thoughts are with the victims who were injured in this bus accident. We hope for their complete recovery.

Bus Accidents in Chicagoland

Over 80 school buses, 15 municipal buses, and 75 transit buses were involved in deadly automobile collisions in 2019 alone, according to records from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Particularly in metropolitan areas, like the Chicagoland region, transit bus accidents continue to be prevalent. At least one Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus is involved in an accident every single day, per the most recent Illinois authorities’ study of the data.

When an accident involving a bus takes place, it is not uncommon for there to be a large number of claimants, each of whom may have had unique injuries that require different degrees of medical treatment. What’s more, the sheer size and power of a bus make it much more likely for victims of these accidents to sustain a wide variety of serious injuries, including but not limited to severe whiplash, damage to the spinal cord, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and more.

Nevertheless, in the aftermath of an accident, you may have a wide variety of legal choices open to you. If you’ve been hurt in a vehicle accident that wasn’t your fault, you should get in touch with an injury accident lawyer in Chicago as soon as you can after the incident.
