Chicago, IL – Two Hurt in School Bus Crash on Lake Shore Dr in Hyde Park

Chicago, IL - Two Hurt in School Bus Crash on Lake Shore Dr in Hyde Park

Chicago, IL (May 14, 2022) – A school bus was involved in a crash that took place on Friday afternoon, May 13, on DuSable/Lake Shore Drive near 57th.

Two people were hurt in the incident, which happened at 5:45 p.m. on southbound Lake Shore Drive, just north of 57th Drive and the Museum of Science and Industry, in the Hyde Park area. A total of five motorists appeared to be involved, in addition to the driver of the school bus.

The school bus driver, identified only as an adult male, and a woman in one of the other vehicles were both taken to an area hospital in fair-to-serious condition. No other injuries were noted.

Southbound Lake Shore was blocked at the scene beginning at 47th Street but reopened a short time later. The accident remains under active investigation, however.

Our thoughts are with the man and woman who were hurt in this bus wreck, as well as their families. We hope for their complete recovery.

School Bus Crashes in Illinois

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, over 80 school buses, 15 municipal buses, and 75 transit buses were involved in fatal vehicle collisions in 2019. These are some of the lowest numbers reported since FARS began collecting data in 1975, thanks to advancements in highway and vehicle safety.

However, bus accidents on public transportation are still rather commonplace around the country, particularly in urban areas like the Chicagoland region. Per the most recent investigation by Illinois officials, authorities discovered that a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus is involved in a vehicle collision at least once each day.

Personal injury lawsuits, as well as situations involving commercial vehicles like buses, can be difficult to navigate. When it comes to a bus accident, there are sometimes several claimants, and each victim may have suffered different injuries needing varying degrees of medical attention. Because of the sheer size and strength of a bus, passengers can sustain very catastrophic injuries in accidents, including severe whiplash, spinal cord damage, TBIs, and more.

That’s why, if you or a loved one has been hurt in one of these incidents, you may have a number of legal options available to you in the aftermath. In the event you’ve been in a vehicle accident that wasn’t your fault, you should speak with an injury accident lawyer in the Chicago area immediately.
