Springfield, IL – 72-Vehicle Wreck on I-55 Leaves 6 Dead, 30 Injured After Dust Storm
Springfield, IL (May 1, 2023) – Six people were killed, and more than 30 were wounded on Monday when at least 70 vehicles collided in central Illinois due to a dust storm.
Wrecked cars blocked Interstate 55 for almost 20 miles just south of Springfield.
Shirley Harper, 88, of Franklin, Wisconsin, was one of the deceased victims identified by Illinois State Police. The identities of the other persons have not yet been released.
Around 11:00 a.m. on Monday, dust from surrounding agricultural fields was blown onto the highway by strong winds, reducing visibility to nearly zero at mile marker 76 in Montgomery County.
Just after 11:15 a.m., the Illinois Department of Transportation tweeted that I-55 in Sangamon and Montgomery Counties was blocked in both directions between Divernon and Farmersville.
According to reports from authorities, victims’ ages vary from 2 years old all the way up to their 80s, and their injuries range from mild to potentially fatal.
An investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released in the interim.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families of Shirley Harper and all other deceased victims. Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families.
