Data on Illinois Bicycle Accidents
Accidents involving bicycles are all too prevalent in Chicago. According to figures provided by the state, between the years 2012 and 2019, an average of six bicyclists lost their lives in Chicago. In addition to this, the occurrence of these serious injury-causing accidents and their related fatalities is becoming increasingly frequent.
In addition, twelve bicyclists died in 2021 alone, and the lion’s share of cyclists were hit by vehicle drivers. To make things even worse, the great majority of these incidents are preventable and are often the result of drivers going too fast or not paying attention to their surroundings.
Adding insult to injury, these victims often suffer from long-term disabilities, including traumatic brain injuries, significant scarring, shattered bones, and other related ailments, assuming that they survive their initial wounds. It is possible that these victims may need emergency surgery or continued medical treatment, from which their recovery might take many weeks or even months.
Sadly, a significant number of these bicyclists pass away as a consequence of their injuries. When these victims are killed in an accident that was not their fault, their bereaved relatives are forced to cope with substantial emotional suffering as well as major financial repercussions. In certain cases, however, victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for their losses.
