Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois
Pedestrian crashes in Illinois account for nearly 1.3% of total collisions. Unfortunately, they also account for 15.8% of all fatal crashes reported in our state. Pedestrians are more likely to suffer severe and fatal injuries and accidents due to the fact that they have no protection during accidents. Unfortunately, nearly 200 people lose their lives each year as a result of pedestrian crashes in our state.
Many of these accidents are a result of driver negligence. When drivers fail to operate their vehicles in a safe manner, they place the lives of other people at risk. This is particularly true for pedestrians, who are already disadvantaged during collisions.
There are many factors that contribute to the high rate of pedestrian crashes that we see in our state. Many of them involve human error. Some of the most common causes of pedestrian crashes that we see include:
- Motorists who failed to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians who are crossing and designated crossing areas.
- Drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol while operating their vehicles.
- Drivers who are distracted by their cell phones or other objects while behind the wheel.
- Drivers who are speeding or traveling too fast for the road conditions or weather.
